Artemis
Apollo drove his golden carriage across the heavens during the dayadmired as the sun-godArtemis also raced across the sky in solemn style at nightrespected as the moon-goddessSitting in an airy carriage drawn by milk white horses,“the queen of wide air  gave off silver light all over the sleeping world belowThough she remained single all her lifethe maiden heart of the goddess was at least for once excited as she saw the beautiful youth Endymion sleeping
She was pure and fair and calmShe was the example of maiden modesty and graceJust as Apollo represents manly beautyso Artemis stands for feminine purity and virginity As their patron goddess she took it as her duty to protect marrying girls and young women in troubleIt was her altar that those maidens turned for love and happiness
The twin sister of Apollo was also the goddess of hunting and wild life Dressed in a short hunting-suit coming up to the knee and followed by a team of noisy lovely fairy maidensArtemis had always her bow of pearl  and shining arrow with her and travelled in the woods in search of wild animalsWhen she felt hot and tired she would retire to a spring to take a bathIt was here that young Actaeon accidentally came and suffered cruel treatment at the hands of the goddessIndeedthegoddesscould be thoroughly heartless and stopped to be lovely as soonas the bad side of her nature got the upper hand in herThe sadthing of Niobe was just a case in point

In due time Hermes was appointed messenger of Zeus andthe godsThe gods equipped him with a pair of winged sandalsand winged cap to enable him to travel swifter than sightIt was Hermes who took the messages of Zeus to the world below
Hermes was a patron of travellersHis busts and statueswere set up as dividing marks at crossroads or street corners toguide passersbyThe Hermesas these statues were calledwere regarded as sacredand their mutilation was sacrilegiousand punishable by deathThedestruction of the numerous Hermes within the city of Athens caused aterrible excitement amongits citizens that it might be no exaggerationto state that itchanged the whole course of historic development ofAthens

Venus and Adonis
Aphrodite loved Adonis more than she did anybody elsefor he was a brisklovely young hunterShe gave up herhome at Olympus and took to the woodsIn the woods she dressed herself up like a huntress and kept the youth company all day longWith him she wandered through grounds andgroves and over hills and valleysShe cheered hunting dogs andpursued animals of a harmless sortThey had a great time togetherHowevershe warned him many times not to chase wild beasts like lions and wolvesbut the young man just laughed at the idea
One dayafter warning him thusshe left for Olympus inher carriageQuite by chance Adonis' hunting dogs found aboarwhich roused Adonis to enthusiasmHe hit the beast with an arrowbut the boarturning on himburied its white tusk deep into his tender side and trampled him to deathWhen Aphrodite came back to find her lover cold in deathshe burst into a passion of tears Unable to take him back from the lower worldshe sprinkled wine on Adonls' blood  and turned it into anemonea delicate purple flower
Aphrodite was not calmed down yetIn grief and despair she flew to Zeus and begged Zeus' sympathyHades was by no means prepared to meet her requestAfter much dispute anagreement was worked out under which Adonis was to spend half the year above ground with Aphroditebut the remaining six months in the Elysian FieldsThereforein spring time Adonis came back to the loving embrace of Aphrodite but when winter came he had to return most reluctantly to Hades

Echo and Narcissus
Narcissus was a handsome youthHis lovely face and graceful form were the admiration of all who looked upon himAnd he knew itHe was proud that he thought no one buthimself was worthy to see his youthful beautyThus given up tosweet thoughts of selfNarcissus avoided all companyHeroamed the wooded little valleys every daymadly in love withhimself
When he was delightfully wandering through the woods onedaya wood fairy maidenEcho by namecaught sight of himShe was excited at onceJoyfully coming down towards Narcissusshe stretched out her loving armsTo her dismayhoweverthe young man roughly brushed her aside and went by without so much as a glance at herThe poor fairy maiden's face turned red and quickly withdrew to a shady spot following the object of her love with her longing eyes
Presently Narcissus stopped to drink from a little streamKneeling down on the bankhe saw a lovely face in the clear waterHis heart gave a beatHe smiled and was smiled back toThinking that it must be a maiden in love with himhe bent down to kiss herAnd her lips also drew near hisBut as soon a she touched the clear surface the lovely face disappearedThe angry youth was now desperateNever had he been looked downupon like that beforeDay and nighthe stayed at the stream without drinking and eatingBefore long he diednever suspecting that his maiden was just his own image in the streamThe gods took pity on the fair dead body and turned it into a flower bearing his name
The intoxicated  Echo saw all thisSlowly she became weak for despised loveuntil at last nothing remained of her except her voice

Echo
Echo was a nymph who talked too muchShe was very fond of having the last wordsOne day she sPoke rudely to the great Herawho said that for this offence  Echo should never use her voice againunless to repeat what she hadjust heardbut since she was very fond of last wordsshe might repeat the last words of othersThis was almost as bad as if Hera had changed her into a parrotEcho was very much ashamedand hid herself in the forest
Narcissusa young man who had hair as yellow as gold an deyes as blue as the sky,——a very rare thing in Greecewhere most people were very dark,——used to hunt in the forest where Echo was hidingAs she was looking out shyly from somecave or from behind a great treeEcho often saw Narcissusandshe admired him very much
One say Narcissus became separated from his friendsandhearing something rustle among the leaveshe called out,“Who's here?”
Here,” answered Echo
Here I amCome!”said Narcissus.
I am come,” said Echoandas she spokeshe came outfrom among the trees
When Narcissus saw a stranger instead of one of his friendsas he had expectedhe looked surprised and walked quickly away.
After this Echo never came out and allowed herself to be seen again and in time she disappeared till she became only a voice
This voice was heard for manymany years in forests and among mountainsparticularly in cavesIn their lonely walkshunters often heard itSometimes it repeated the barking of their dogssometimes it repeated their own last wordsIt  always had a strange and sad soundand seemed to make lonely places more lonely still

Hyacinthus
Hyacinthus was a beautiful Greek boy who was greatlyloved by ApolloApollo often laid aside his golden lyreand his arrowsand came down from Mount Olympus to Join Hyacinthus in his boyish gamesThe two were often busy all day longfollowing the huntingdogs over the mountains or setting fish nets in the river or playing at various games
Their favourite exercise was the throwing of the discus The discus was a heavy metal plate about a foot across whichwas thrown somewhat as the round ring is thrownOne dayApollo threw the discus firstand sent it whirling high up amongthe clouds for the god had great strengthIt came down in afinestrong curveand Hyacinthus ran to pick it upThen as it fell on the hard earththe discus bounded up again and struck the boy a cruel blow on his white forehead
Apollo turned as pale as Hyacinthusbut he could not undo  what had been doneHe could only hold his friend in hisarmsand see his head bend down like a lily on a broken stem while the purple blood from his wound was dropping down to the earth
There was still one way by which Apollo could make Hyacinthus liveand this was to change him into a flowerSoquicklybefore it was too latehe whispered over him certainwords the gods knewand Hyacinthus became a purple flowera flower of the colour of the blood that had flowed from his foreheadAs the flower unfoldedit showed a strange mark on itspetals which looked like the Greek words meaning woewoe
Apollo never forgot his boy friendbut sang about him to the accompaniment of his wonderful lyre till the name of Hyacinthus was known and loved all over
