Pandora

After the stealing of fireZeus became increasingly unkind to menOne day he ordered his son Hephaestus tobuild an image of a beautiful maiden out of clayHe then asked the gods and goddesses to award her with different kinds of giftsAmong othersAthena clothed her in an attractive coat and Hermes gave her the power of telling liesA charming young ladyshe was the first woman that ever livedZeus called her PandoraBecause she had received from each of the gods and goddesses a giftThe gift was harmful to men
Zeus decided to send her down to men as a presentSo Hermes them essenger brought her to Epimetheusbrother of PrometheusThe greatness of her beauty touched the hearts of all who looked upon herand Epimetheus happily received her into his houseHe had quite forgotten Pometheus' warningnever to accept anything from ZeusThe couple lived a happy life for some timeThen trouble came on to the human world
When he was busy with teaching men the art of livingPrometheus had left a bigcask in the care of EpimetheusHe had warned his brother not to open the lidPandora was a curious womanShe had been feeling very disappointed that her husband did not allow her to take a look at the contents of the caskOne daywhen Epimetheus was outshe lifted the lid and out itcame unrest and warPlague and sicknesstheft and violence  grief sorrowand all the other evilsThe human world was hence to experience these evilsOnly hope stayed within the mouth of the jar and never flew outSo men always have hope within their hearts

He was the one god who ever had to submit to the power ofhis inferiors At one time lack of tact and good udge ment led to his shameHe was fighting with two giantsand finding himself no match for the two monstrous creatureslaid down hisarms and was imprisoned in chains He was set free in the end by the artful  Hermesbut not before he had suffered all the humiliations .
He was as thoughtless as he was unkind A son of Poseidon'sattempting to kidnap his daughtermade the war-god unhappyso that he killed the youth Without he sitation. In retaliation Poseidon dragged him before a group of Athenian judges for trialThe court was held on a hill outside AthensAres presented his case and was declared innocent . The hill was ever after called Areopagus,“the hill of Ares”,and the judges receivedthe names of Areopagitae

The Sirens
Far out in the sea there was an islandon the rocky edge of which lived three Sirensthe three sisters of magic songHalf human and half birdthe Siren sisters sat in a field of flowerssinging in voices that excited the hearts of menThe attractive songs were so sweet that ships were attracted to the island and struck to pieces on the rocksNo sailor nor ship had ever been known to pass the Island of the Sirens without being attracted to  disaster
Acting on the advice of CirceOdysseus took careful preparation against the SirensBefore their ships came to where they could hear the songOdysseus had himself tied to the  mast stopped the ears of his men with wax and ordered them to ignore his orders and gestures when they were passing the fatal island
Soon they came in sight of the rocky islandand the attractive song reached the ears of OdysseusIt moved him so much that he struggled in  despair  to free himself and shouted for his men to turn towards the rich and flowery grass land of the singing sistersBut no one paid any attention to himThe sailors kept straight on until they were completely out of hearingThen his friends freed him and took the wax out of their earsFor once the Sirens had sung with no effectsThe eldest of the sistersPartheropeloved Odysseus so much that she threw herself into the sea after his ships had passed
