I support you...have been used linux for several years, and converted many of my friend to linux, 80% of the people who don't use linux are because they think it'll be difficult to use...but some distributions are REALLY easier than windows.
for latex, since i touched it i haven't even touched OO...maybe because i love the feeling of compiling.
PS. I attended the guadec this year in turkey, and discussed with the gnome developers, many of them just begin by asking questions on the ML, and finishing by answering questions on the ML...
I love linux, not only its usability, but the concept of freedom, hope more and more people become user/contributor
