Two Type 052B (Guangzhou class) multirole missile destroyers havebeen built by Jiangnan Shipyard of Shanghai for the PLA Navy. The Type052B is larger than any indigenous destroyers previously built and hasenhanced air defence and anti-submarine capabilities achieved byfitting it with newly developed and imported weapon and sensor systems. Both ships were commissioned in 2004.
PROGRAMME
Following the launch of the Type 051B (Shenzhen class, NATOcodename: Luhai class) missile destroyer in 1998, the PLA Navy did notbuild more hulls of the same class as some predicted. Instead, the PLANavy started to develop a new class of destroyer with displacement andimproved weapon systems. This is largely because of the incapable airdefence systems of the Type 051B. The Type 052 is fitted with enhancedair defence capability including the Russian-made 9M38 Buk-M1-2 (NATOcodename: SA-N-12 Grizzly) air defence missile system and theindigenous Type 730 close-in weapon systems (CIWS), to achieve theoperational requirements of the PLA Navy.
Building of the first-of-class ship, 168 Guangzhou, began in 2000.Unconfirmed reports indicated that the building of the ship was delayedbecause of the difficulty in acquiring the Ukraine DA/DN80 gas turbine. The ship was launched on 23 May 2002, and had been stationed atJiangnan Shipyard sine then for weapon and radar system installations. The sea trial began in May 2003, and the ship officially enteredservice with the PLA Navy on 15 July 2004. The second ship 169 Wuhanwas launched in January 2003 and commissioned in late 2004.
The Type 052B is thought to be comparable to the Russian Project956E (Sovremenny class) destroyer in terms of general performance andcapability. This project has set a perfect example of integrating theindigenous platform with foreign-made systems to fill the gap beforesimilar indigenous systems become available, thus reducing the amountof time required in the whole project.
Nevertheless, the acquiring of the two Type 052B destroyers willdefinitely further increase the PLA Navy’s capability to combat in deepocean. It also demonstrates China’s rapid progress in building a ‘bluewater’ navy that is capable of operating far away from its homeports, acapability that the Chinese navy has been seeking for nearly twodecades.

DESIGN
The displacement of the ship is estimated to be 6,500 tonnes. Theship’s hull design incorporates strong radar signature reductionfeatures such as the sloped sides and reduced external features. Thehull surface is coated in radar-absorbent paint. The funnel also hascooling devices to reduce the ship’s infrared feature. The ships has astern flight deck and a helicopter hanger to accommodate one Ka-28 ASWhelicopter.
MISSILES
The ship is armed with two Russian-made 9M38 surface-to-air missilelaunchers, one on the front deck behind the 100mm main gun, and one ontop of the helicopter hanger. The launchers can fire the 9M38 Buk-M1-2(NATO codename: SA-N-12 Grizzly) semi-active, radar-homing,medium-range air defence missile. The missile uses the ship’sRussian-made MAE-5 Top Plate 3D circular scan radar for targettracking, and the Front Dome (two radar for each launcher, each radarwith two guidance channels) indication radar for missile guidance. Upto three missiles can be aimed simultaneously. The range is up to 38kmagainst aircraft and 20km against anti-ship cruise missile. The shipcarries 48 9M38 missiles.
Four 4-cell launcher for the YJ-83 (C-803) sea-skimming,radar-homing anti-ship cruise missile system are installed behind thefunnel. The YJ-83 is said to have a final approach speed of Mach 1.5and a maximum range of 150km. It is noted that the YJ-83 onboard theType 052B relies on a Russian-made Band Stand fire-control radar toprovide target information, which would enable the YJ-83 to reach itsmaximum range of fire without relaying target information by theshipborne helicopter.
GUNS
This is the first PLA Navy warship to be fitted with the close-inweapon system (CIWS). Two seven-barrel 30mm Type 730 CIWS are locatedboth sides behind the bridge. The weapon system has a maximum rate offire of 4,600~5,800 rounds/min.
The ship has a single-barrel 100mm gun developed by 713 Institute onthe basis of the French Creusot-Loire T100C design. The gun can be usedagainst surface targets and air targets such as aircraft and low speedmissile, with a maximum rate of fire of 90 rounds/min. The gun can beoperated in fully automatic mode from the radar control system, fromthe shipborne optical sighting system, or laid manually. The turretdesign incorporates strong radar cross-section reduction features.
ANTI-SUBMARINE SYSTEMS
The ship is fitted with two triple 324mm Yu-7 (Mk-46 Mod 1)antisubmarine torpedo tubes and two Type 75 twelve-barrel 240mmantisubmarine rocket launchers. Range is up to 1,200m. The rocket isarmed with a 34kg warhead.
Additionally, the destroyer has four 18-barrel multiple rocketlaunchers (MRLs) installed on the front deck. The purpose of these MRLsremains unknown but is thought to be used to launch antisubmarinerockets, ground- attack rockets and/or decoys/chaffs.
SENSORS
The air search radar is a Russian MAE-5 (NATO codename: Top Plate)3D air search radar operating at E/H band. The radar has a maximumdetect range of 230km to aircraft and 50km to sea-skimming missile. There are four (in contrast to six on Sovremenny class) Russian FrontDome fire control radar for the 9M38 air defence missile. The main gunand anti-ship missile are controlled by the Russian Band Stand radaroperating at D/E/F band.
COMMAND AND CONTROL
The ZJK-5 combat system onboard the Type 052B is thought to be animproved variant of the Type 051B (Luhai class)’s ZJK-4-3A. The ZJK-5is based on the 1553B military data bus and the 100Mbps Ethernettechnology. The multi-channel defence suite is capable of engagingseveral targets simultaneously.
HELICOPTER
The ship’s stern hanger accommodates one Kamov Ka-28 (NATO codename:Helix) antisubmarine warfare (ASW) helicopter. Carrying various weaponsincluding torpedoes and deep charges, the helicopter can operate in allweather conditions up to 200km from the host ship.
PROPULSIONS
The ship’s propulsion is in the form of CODOG, consisting of twoUkraine-made DA80/DN80 gas turbines rated at 48,600hp and two Shaanxidiesels (Chinese copy of the MTU 20V956TB92) rated at 8,840hp (6.5 MW).

The Type 022 is the PLA Navy’s new-generation stealth missile fastattack craft (FAC) first introduced in 2004. The first-of-class boat(pennant number 2208) was launched at Shanghai-based Qiuxin Shipyard inApril 2004. The boat features a unique high-speed, wave-piercingcatamaran hull design with evident radar cross-section reduction designfeatures. A number of Chinese shipyards across the country have beeninvolved in the construction of the boat. Since 2004, over 30 unitshave already been delivered to the PLA Navy, with more expected to comein the coming years.
A new type of naval combat vessel was first spotted underconstruction at Qiuxin Shipyard in Summer 2004. The mysterious vesselfeatures a unique wave-piercing catamaran hull design with some evidentradar cross-section reduction features. Later it was confirmed that thevessel was the PLA Navy’s new Type 022 missile fast attack craft (FAC).The first-of-class boat carrying pennant number 2208 completed seatrial in late 2004 and was possibly commissioned in 2005. It wasfollowed by three additional boats (2209, 2210 and 2211) in 2005~06.More hulls have been spotted under construction at other locationssince early 2006, replacing the ageing Type 021 (Huangfeng class)missile FAC in the PLA Navy service.
Catamaran vessels have existed for many centuries, mainly forsailing sport. In recent years there has been an increase trend ofemploying the catamaran design on high-speed ferries. Although a numberof logistic and combat support vessels in the catamaran form weretested in the past, no catamaran has ever been built for direct combatrole in the modern naval history. The Type 022 missile FAC is indeedthe world’s first combat catamaran that has been commissioned.Coincidently, the U.S. Navy is also testing a high-speed, wave-piercingcatamaran known as FSF1 ‘Sea Fighter’ for the littoral warfare role.
The wave-piercing catamaran offers great high-speed, long-distancecursing performance. The twin hulls of the catamaran enable the vesselto be more stable when travelling at high speeds than the conventionalsingle-hull craft. Catamarans are especially favourable in coastalshallow waters, where large single-hull warships have limitations dueto their deeper draft. The Type 022 missile FAC is likely to be usedfor costal defence roles in conjunction with larger surface ships andland-based aircraft.
The boat features two large missile complexes at the stern, eachhousing four YJ-83 anti-ship missiles. On the front deck locates aRussian AK-630 30mm close-in weapon system (CIWS) for short-range airdefence. There are also two 4-cell tube launchers on the bow deck, possibly for launching decoys/chaffs.
The craft has a single large mask on which a number of unidentifiedsensors are mounted. A single datalink antenna is located between thetwo missile complexes, indicating the vessel has the capability toreceive target information from other surface or airborne sensors.
* 160“广州”号在1978年受到严重损伤并且已经退役(160 Guangzhou was seriously damaged by an explosion in 1978, and was scrapped)
** 舰船已经接收现代化改装(Ships that have received modernisation refit)
The PLA Navy has 16 Type 051 (NATO codename: Ludaclass) missile destroyers built between 1970 and 1991. The ship’sprimary role is anti-surface warfare, with limited anti-air andanti-submarine warfare capabilities. In the late 1990s, a majormodernisation refit programme began to enhance the anti-surface andair-defence capabilities of the Type 051. The destroyers may begradually phased out in the coming years as the PLA Navy receives morenew surface combatants. PROGRAMME
Early development of the People’s Liberation ArmyNavy (PLAN) was centred on three main elements: land-based aviationforces, submarines, and small fast attack crafts. Large surfacecombatants such as destroyers were regarded by the Chinese militaryplanners as unnecessary for China’s defence strategy and obsolete in“the age of nuclear”. Up until the mid-1970s the PLA only operated foursecond-hand WWII-era Soviet-built destroyers in its surface fleet.
From the late 1960s, China began to prepare for itsfirst full-range intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test launch.A navy task force consisting of space tracking ships, maritime researchships, rescue ships, and replenishment ships were being built to fulfilthe task of recovering the missile re-entry capsule in the SouthernPacific. However, none of the PLA Navy’s existing surface warship wasable to escort the task force for such a long distance. A largersurface combatant with strong self-retain capability for long-rangecruise was requested.
The Type 051 missile destroyer is China’s firstindigenous surface combatant capable of operating in deep oceans faraway from the homeport. The ship was specifically equipped to receivesupplies from replenishment ships in the sea. First of class 105 Jinanwas launched in 1970 and commissioned in 1971. A total of 17 units werebuilt in Dalian Shipyard (Dalian, Liaoning Province), Zhonghua Shipyard(Shanghai), and Guangzhou Shipyard (Guangzhou, Guangdong Province).Units built after 1977 have a slightly different superstructure andradar systems. The last unit 166 Zhuhai entered service in 1993.
The Type 051 destroyer was generally regarded asobsolete even when it was built. The ship has a relatively stronganti-surface firepower, but only possesses very basic air defence andanti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. The ship lacks sophisticatedC3I systems commonly seen on modern warships, and has little, if any, chance in confronting modern warships in deep ocean. However, the Type051 played an important role in the PLA Navy’s shift from a littoraldefence force towards a ‘blue water’ navy, in that it provided valuableexperience in building and operating a large surface combatant.
Since the late 1990s, the PLA Navy have beenupgrading its Type 051 fleet with more advanced weapon suites. By 2004most of these ships have been upgraded to the Type 051G standard.Modifications include the more capable YJ-83 anti-ship missilereplacing the original HY-2 missile; the introduction of HQ-7air-defence missile system and automatic twin-37mm anti-aircraftartillery (AAA) guns, and an indigenous combat data system to providebasic C3I capabilities. It is expected that these ships will remain inactive duty until the late 2000s or early 2010s before they are retired. DEPLOYMENT

Type 051 with helicopter hanger (Luda-II):First of class Jinan (105) was converted in 1987 be fitted with aflight deck and a hanger to accommodate two Harbin Z-9C helicopters. The ship had its aft twin-130mm main gun and dual-57mm AAA guns removedto give space for the hanger and flight deck. The ship is also said tobe fitted with an ASW C3I centre. Type 051G (Luda-III): This variantwas originally developed as Type 051S to be fitted with British-madeweapon systems. After the project was cancelled, the hulls were builtunder the Type 051 command variant standard. The first ship Zhanjiang(165) was fitted with new C3I and sensors, but with old weapon systems. The second ship Zhuhai (166) was fitted with upgraded weapon systemsincluding 8 YJ-8 (C-801) anti-ship missiles and twin-37mm automatic AAAguns. Both ships have received the modernisation refit in 2004. Type 051 modernisation refit: ThePLA Navy experimentally fitted the French-made Crotale air-defencemissile system and the Castor-II fire-control radar on two Type 051destroyers Xi’an (106) and Kaifeng (109) in 1991. In 1999 Kaifeng (109)received a mid-life modernisation refit with the original HY-2 sixmissiles replaced by 16 YJ-83 (C-803) anti-ship missiles. The original37mm and 57mm manual AAA guns were also replaced by four automatic Type76A AAA guns. A further two ships Dalian (110) and Zhanjiang (165)received similar refit between 2003 and 2005. MISSILES
The ships that have received their mid-lifemodernisation are fitted with an 8-cell HQ-7 short-range air-defencemissile launcher. The missile has a range of 13 km and uses semi-activeradar/optical homing to deliver a 14kg fragmentation warhead at speedof 2.4 Mach. The system has 8 ready-to-fire and 16 spare missiles, which need to be reloaded manually.
The original HY-1 anti-ship missile onboard the Type051 are replaced by the more capable YJ-83 anti-ship missile followingthe refit. The missile system has sixteen box launchers (in fourgroups, each with 4 launchers). The missile uses active radar homingand is powered by a turbojet (with a solid rocket booster). Theanti-ship missile has a range of 150~200km and approaches the target insea skimming mode at a speed of Mach 1.5. The 165kg shaped chargewarhead has time delayed impact proximity fuses. GUNS
The ship has two dual-130mm/58 calibre main guns(one front, one aft), which fire shells at a rate of 17 rounds/min to arange of 29km against surface targets. The shell weights 33.4kg. Someunits are fitted with more capable twin-100mm main guns featuring aturret with strong radar cross-section reduction features.
The original manual dual-37/57mm and dual-25mm AAAguns were removed during the refit and replaced by four Type 76Adual-37 mm automatic AAA guns, which fires shells at a rate of 400rounds/min to a range of 9.4km for airborne targets. ANTI-SUBMARINE SYSTEMS
All ships are fitted with two Type 75 (FQF-2500)twelve-barrel 240mm antisubmarine rocket launchers. Range is up to1,200m. The rocket is armed with a 34kg warhead.
Some ships were fitted with two Alenia B515S triple324mm torpedo launchers and the A244S anti-submarine torpedoes importedfrom Italy. The A244S carries a 45kg to engage underwater target at aspeed of 45kt, and has a maximum range of 10km. After the modernisationrefit programme these may have been replaced by the Chinese indigenousYu-7 torpedo featuring a longer range and better performance.
The ship also carries 4 BMB projectors and 4 racks for depth charges. Alternatively the ship can carry 38 mines. RADAR
