Error Message:
1720 - SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure. Your hard disk drive is detecting an imminent failure. To ensure no data loss, backup contents and replace this hard disk.
Translation:
You may see this error on an HP notebook, and it indicates the HP Self Test has found a serious error on your hard drive that may cause it to fail. The notebook found the error because some HP notebooks have SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) hard drives, which can run self tests to locate problems and act as an early warning system. If you see this error, HP recommends that you immediately back up the personal data on your PC to a CD, DVD, USB flash drive, or an external hard drive.
Solution:
After you back up your data, HP suggests you test the hard drive with the included HP Hard Drive Self Test software, because these errors are sometimes caused by data corruption that can be repaired. Before you begin, plug the AC Adapter into your HP notebook; the test may take a while and use much of your battery’s power. If you can’t get the error off the screen, press and hold the POWER button for five seconds to turn off your PC. Then, hold the F10 and POWER buttons until the BIOS Setup Utility is displayed. Use the right arrow key to select the Tools menu. You’ll want to run a Quick test, Comprehensive test, and SMART test. To run one of the tests, use your arrow keys to highlight the appropriate test, and then press the ENTER key to execute the test. Note that the various tests attempt to repair data corruption on your hard drive, but they will not report a repair. Therefore, once the tests are done, you’ll need to restart your PC to see if the tests repaired the hard drive problem. If all the tests pass, the error could have been caused by shock and your hard drive should not be damaged. If any parts of the tests fail, HP suggests you contact HP service and support.
