Origine du nom [modifier]

Ce gâteau est originaire d'Allemagne où il porte le nom de Schneckenkuchen signifiant Gâteau en escargots. En effet sa forme est composée de spirales juxtaposées rappelant la coquille du gastéropode.
Un des premiers importateurs Français de ce gâteau ne parlait pas un mot d'allemand et quand il se faisait livrer, le fournisseur lui présentait ses "Schneckenkuchen". Devant la difficulté à prononcer ce mot, l'importateur répondait "de toutes façons pour moi c'est du Chinois" Le mot Chinois est resté pour le désigner.
