Actually in french, the " l' " that appears in your sentence is incorrect. Here's an example : imagine that you've borrowed something from somebody, and that you haven't returned it to him(her).
Then you could either say :
- "je ne l'ai pas rendu" which would mean that you didn't return something to someone, but we don't know to who.
or :
-"je ne lui ai pas rendu" which would mean that you didn't return something to a man. (lui -> him ; elle -> her)
