China has reached a reciprocal driver's licence agreement with France, recognising the validity of driving licences issued by each other.
The agreement, signed by China's Ministry of Public Security and the French Interior Ministry in Beijing on Tuesday, allows licenced drivers from France to drive cars or acquire local driving licences in China - and vice versa - without being required to take another driving test, ifeng News reported.
The new policy is set to take effect within 90 days of legal confirmation from both countries.
It represents a welcome change for Chinese citizens looking to remain in France for more than a year, who previously would have had to undertake the entire testing process before receiving a French licence.
Currently, most western countries recognise Chinese driver's licences for between six and 12 months.
France is the third country to establish a reciprocal driver's licence agreement with China, after Belgium and the United Arab Emirates.
China and France also on Tuesday signed a range of agreements on nuclear energy and science during French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve’s visit to Beijing.
